Grammartini

by Fitzroy on March 6, 2009

The folks at SPOGG, who sponsor National Grammar Day, have their priorities straight up: their site includes the “Grammartini.”

Being the careful people that they are, they have the recipe almost right. On the positive side, they use actual gin (no cheap substitutes). Vodka must be among the “Things that Make Us [Sic].”

I would quibble with their slightly high quotient of vermouth and suggestion than you shake rather than stir.

But grammarians, I’m sure, can handle a little quibbling.

I beg to differ. I believe they have the recipe exactly right. Vermouth has fallen out of favor, but I believe it to be essential. Can it truly be a cocktail if all it has in it is gin? I also shake rather than stir if only for the ritual.

But Ken, I did not suggest leaving out the vermouth entirely. I just think the suggested 1:5 ratio is a little rich. And I certainly don’t begrudge anyone their ritual, especially if it results in the superb photography you turn out.
